The University of Ghana is the eldest and
prevalent of the 13 African nation universities and tertiary establishments. It was founded in 1948 because the University school of the Gold Coast, and was originally an affiliate school of the University of London, which supervised its educational programmes and awarded degrees. It gained full university status in 1961, and now has nearly forty, 000 students.
The original emphasis was on the subject area, social sciences, basic science, agriculture, and medicine, but (partially as the results of a national instructional reform programme) the information was enlarged to produce a lot of technology-based and line courses and postgraduate coaching.
The university is mainly based mostly at Legon, about twelve kilometres northeast of the centre of Accra. The medical school is in Korle Bu, with a instruction hospital and secondary campus in the town of Accra. It also has a grad school of nuclear and allied sciences at the Ghana nuclear energy Commission, making it one of the few universities on the Africa continent giving programmes in nucleonics and technology.

The university has eight residence halls of which were appointed in 2011. They are:

Jean Nelson Hall, another of the newly shaped halls, it was named after the primary Ghanaian Vice-Chancellor, Jean Nelson Aka. It was installed in July. Its emblem shows a candle, a book and a pen to symbolize perseverance. It was intended by a final year Physics-Computer Science major student, Raymond Sung-Seh Harrison.
Hilla Limann Hall, the first of the University of Gold Coast Enterprise restricted (UGEL) Hostels to be completed. It was inaugurated in July 2010 throughout that the Vice-Chancellor proclaimed the choice to call it when Hilla Limann, a former President of the Republic of Ghana. Senior Associates of the University may be allotted as Fellows of the Hall by the administrator, Students dispersed to the Hall form the junior members. The Head of Hall, Senior Tutor and fellow tutors as a body helps with the foremost of the Hall.
Elizabeth Sey Hall, the second of the newer halls built by University of Gold Coast Enterprise restricted (UGEL) Hostels to be completed. It was inaugurated in July 2010 it had been named when the primary feminine graduate of the university Elizabeth Say.
Africa Union Hall, formerly referred to as Pentagon engineered by SSNIT
James Topp Nelson Yankah Hall, formerly identified as TF Hostel.
Bani Hall, initially a non-public hostel that was later changed into a hall when the residency agreement with the University had pass on.
Evandy Hall, formerly Evandy Hostel and this was turned into a hall when the residency agreement with the University pass on and possession transferred to college authorities,
Commonwealth Hall, it is the sole male hall within the University.
Hostels
There are 3 university hostels, the International Students' Hostels and the Valco Trust Hostel. There are conjointly non-public hostels, SSNIT Hostels (Ghana Hostels also identified as Pentagon).
Bank, postal and different services
Ghana industrial Bank, Standard hired Bank, Barclays Bank,Cal Bank, HFC Bank and Ecobank Gold Coast have branches on the Legon field. There is a branch of the national communicating (Ghana Post) on campus. Other banks have ATMs on field.
Roads usage and user charges
From 1 Feb 2014, all vehicles entering the University of Ghana's main field, and also those victimisation the road passing through the employees Village of the University were needed to pay charges. This was heavily criticized by public and students and has been suspended.
